First introduced in 2010, the United States Mint's America the Beautiful series is a multi-year program to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories. Under this program, the Mint is scheduled to release five new reverse designs for the quarter-dollar each year through 2021. The coins will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site.
The Yosemite National Park quarter was the third coin released in the American the Beautiful Quarters Program. Encompassing nearly 1,200 square miles of deep valleys, grand meadows and ancient giant sequoias, Yosemite was one of the first wilderness parks in the United States. The reverse of the 2010 Yosemite National Park Quarter features an image of El Capitan, the world's largest granite monolith, which rises more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor.
